Apologies:  David Blakeley, Gary & Daphne Hunt, Gunnar Neander, Ray Sofio, Jason Sou, Bert Toogood.

After an unavoidable postponement courtesy of Cyclone Yasi, it was very pleasing to see a good roll-up to this, the first meeting for 2011, and the first hosted by Allen and Nerilee Stayt at their beautiful home on the Esplanade at Clifton Beach.  Members were welcomed by Allen and inspected work on his layout where several trains were given a run.

Following a delightful lunch, prepared by Nerilee with helpers Carolyn, Kaila and Foraya, a short meeting was held.  As David and Gunnar were both not present, David resting after working non-stop since Yasi and Gunnar in Germany, there was no treasurer’s report and no scribe.  Which is why this newsletter will be both brief and late!

Graham moved that the annual election of office bearers be postponed to March, seconded by Peg and agreed to by the members present.  Also discussed in general business was the need to fill vacancies for 2011 meetings. If you have not hosted a meeting before you are encouraged to do so, remember you do NOT have to have a layout and the degree of catering is entirely up to you.

At present we have hosts for March (Martin – more later), June (Graham), July (Don – Saturday meeting), August (David – also Saturday meeting), September (Bert) and December (Rod & Ruth). So we need volunteers for April, May, October and November.

Show and Tell:

John. Showed and spoke on some articles he had come across in “Big Noise’ magazine, the journal of the Ipswich Railway museum.  The articles related to the use of steam loco’s to provide power for Brisbane suburban electric car sets which had been completed before the catenary was operational.  The other article concerned a record breaking ‘Thomas’ layout.  It is hoped that all paid attention as John has indicated that there WILL BE an exam!

Martin. showed his Ian Lindsay kit for a NSW 70 class diesel, which is progressing nicely.  He was seen buying some ‘Railey’ paints from Trevor so perhaps we may see a painted 70 class in the near future.

Peter.  Once again showed samples of his superb craftsmanship with his latest work on the Austrian 1847 era 4-2-0 which he is building for Manfred.  Shown at this meeting were the (incomplete) tender with water pump.  As there was such limited room (or no) room for a water tank in the tender this will be located in the covered ‘biscuit’ wagon also shown.

Graham.  Showed several items obtained during his recent trip South, a copy of the book ‘Sydney’s electric trains – A personal history’ and a recent copy of the periodical ‘Australian railway history’.
